I know its been waaaay too long and I am ashamed. I have taken up a little part time job to make some extra cash. I substitute teach and my God those kids are funny! I think I finally get t he hang of it and it is no Cake Walk. I won't be able to actually start pottery classes again for another few weeks and I can't wait! I have to admit part of the reason I have been slacking so much is due to the new part time job and coming home dead tired. I did realize though that my number one seller is the Honey Pot. So I just made a load of those which are now in the shop here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/LizetPotteryStudio?ref=si_shop&view_type=list

What I have been working on more is pattern! I love looking up patterns or being surprised what I find in fashion magazines. Here are few pattern ideas I got from looking up cool dresses.

Love these patterns. I think I need to make some pots with color blocking. I also look up Henna tattoos for inspiration.
Hello! So I just got a small part time job to make a little extra cash and since I know it might consume me a bit at first I am trying to finish up the last 10 pounds of clay I have. I have been practicing my knob throwing on lids. They look great! Most of them are in the kiln right now (as part of the small army of honey pots I made). I have a few to share though. I am just going lidded pot crazy though. I am very happy that I am getting better at sizing them up. Before I had problems even though I used the calipers. Here are some cylinder canisters or jars I have just finished on Monday. I got some red clay on them, but its no big deal.

Here is another thing that has been on the drying table for a while. A little teapot. It is the first one I have made with an attached handle and not a cane or bamboo one. I'm not crazy about how it came out, but overall I like it.

And last are some pots that I got around to posting today. The serving bowl is my first finished Terracotta piece. I decided the "naked" natural clay needed to stay that way. Have a great weekend!
I know some people get spring fever, but I get it for fall. I have carved two pumpkins (both scary faces, no template needed), bought countless gourds, and cut out too many paper decorations for the house. I loved every minute of October and I am sad to see it go. I also spent some time at the County Line Orchard, which I can't get enough of and might make another trip to. Here is a picture of me chilling with the pumpkins. I couldn't really open my eyes due to the crazy sun.

I have been making more than I actually get done, which means I make stuff and later think that it is ugly! Hate when that happens. So tonight I have about four honey pots to trim and their lids to attach handles (or throw knobs) to. The owner of Tru Bee Honey purchased one of my honey pots and I hope to hear more from her. I was like, "Why don't I make more honey pots? They always sell!" So that is what I have been working on. Here are few pieces that I just posted to today and you can feast your eyes on them below. I just realized that they are candy corn colors. I told you I had the fever!
So I really really hate working down there! I often feel like when I have to get a lot of glazing done I have good ideas for throwing and get good ideas for glazing when I have nothing to glaze and should go on the wheel. Whats a potter to do?! So anyways I have gotten some goods from the kiln earlier today that I just posted today. Here they are!

Okay well since I use geometry when making these pots, they make cool patterns from the top too.
I had a hard time deciding whether or not the blue one was fish scales or scalloped pattern. Maybe scalloped is only with edges and potatoes, so I listed it as fish scales. I also took my photos differently this time. I used a piece of white paper to make it seem seamless in the back. To see more check out my shop. www.lizetpotterystudio.etsy.com Here are a few mores pieces that I posted last week too.
I have had the worst creative rut ever. Last night I finally got back in to my painting groove. I can't say that I have really made as much progress in my throwing routine, but I'm getting there. I'm not having a problem on the wheel as far as being able to make stuff, its just that I don't know what to make lately. It hasn't helped that I have recently had some real duds come out of the kiln. It can make you feel like real crap when you invested material (a lot of it!) and time into some pieces (especially if they are custom orders!) and they don't come out anywhere close to what you envisioned. These bowls below had an accident in the kiln and did not come out as planned. The pretty blue turned out like ugly bruises. There are four of these fairly sizable bowls and they are all crappy nasty bruises! Oh yeah, and they are supposed to look warped. I squished them once I pulled them off of the wheel.

YUCK!

This one was a very pretty teapot that I loved. Then I had this idea for a geometric pattern and I don't hate it, but I definitely don't love it. I may still post it in my store. I still have to put on the cane handle. The glazing took about two hours!

Don't even ask me why I chose Barney colors.

Today I have class to teach and a few red clay pieces coming out of the kin as bisque. I'm going to see if I can glaze them in time for the glaze firing tonight. Never completed a terracotta piece so I am excited to see them all done. One is a teapot! Other than that, I have been on a 12 oz bottle making craze lately and these are some I am having dry.

Here are a few pieces that I worked on last night. Right after my Mexico trip I had a love affair with the art of bowl throwing. I just couldn't stop. There are just so many shapes to make so I experimented with different types. So here are some I stayed up to glaze. Sometimes you just get a really good idea and don't care how long or meticulous the work will be. Thats what happened with these bowls last night. The one on the left is going to turn out dark blue and white and its hard to see the sharp pointy flower I painted in the bottom of it. The one on the right is coming out orange and white and I really like the way it looks.

And last are the set of bowls I recently added to my shop. They also have that warped edge look. The process is so slow lately I just want to restock my shop already! I am such an impatient potter which any potter or hand builder knows is really kind of a contradiction isn't it?
I love pulling out sweaters and the Halloween smell in the air. Since I have been completely uninspired up until last week, I have nothing of my work to really share. I just started getting on the ball with restocking my store and finding my rhythm again and my new students are great. I have to say, I believe my teaching skills are getting better with each group and I am very proud and often impressed with my students! Each group makes things batter and faster than the last. It gives me hope that maybe one day I can give my own classes in my own studio. So anyways, I am letting the Halloween spirit take over this post until I get more things out of the kiln. I found some of the coolest stuff on Esty for handmade Halloween goodies. I have the link to the shop underneath the photo. Take a peek!

Hello! I know it has been just about forever since my last post. I was very busy dealing with my first wholesale order and the stress and nerves that come with it! It was a very exciting and rewarding experience. I will have a post set up soon about it when I get pictures of everything set up in the store this weekend. The cute boutique is about an hour from my house so, I haven't gone yet to visit my pots. Well...they aren't really mine anymore are they? So other than that and an fun weekend trip to Minnesota, I have been very unproductive in my studio. I have been having issues with getting to the school where I usually teach in order to get stuff fired. So if all goes well this weekend, I will have an electrician here to look at my kiln situation and give me an estimate. That way I can fire all on my own!
These are a few pieces I was working on. The top was actually a custom order that I have to redo (she decided after I made them that she wanted them bigger), but I can still sell these as a set no problem. The edges are supposed to be warped, which is a lot harder than it seems. I beat the crap out of them right after they were thrown and they still ended up drying fairly round. The bottom is a teapot that I finished last week and I can't wait to see how the handle will look on it. The lid has a thrown knob. I think those look best.
These pots are custom orders that I didn't share, because they were sent out right before I left for Mexico. The top bowl came out really nice, but it cracked during shipping! It will be a challenge if I continue to sell such large items. I might not anymore. The bottom creamer and sugar set are a blue version of my popular orange set. They came out perfect and the customer was very happy.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-326894083645453880.post-69314837064051981242011-08-11T19:13:00.000-07:002011-08-11T19:13:45.852-07:00I'm Back!Hello! I am back from my very fun vacation in Mexico. Now, I know I had mentioned something about a food blog, but it just didn't happen. Besides days of being sick and eating nothing more than a few saltines, I often forgot my camera. However, I will share what I did happen to get photos of. The big problem with traveling and everyone having their own camera: you often leave it at home so you don't weigh your purse down and leave the picture taking to one or two people! I had so much fun in Puerto Vallarta, but I think the best part was spent with my family down there. I hadn't been there in over five years and had a lot of catching up to do. Here are some pictures of where we rented out house.

There were iguanas and small lizards everywhere! I caught this one walking past the pool. I did happen to get in a few photos of the food that I was so passionate about eating.

This was probably my favorite and most simple meal of the whole trip. They are tacos al pastor sold in the down town area. You can get these anywhere in Mexico and they are so damn good! I had five and felt embarrassed to order more. These pics below are of a cook out we had at the beach house. We bought a very fresh whole red snapper, some shrimps, and some tuna steaks. The tuna was my favorite. The spread we had on the table was beautiful. My family made plenty of salsa and cactus for the meal. Check out those beautiful bowls that we used from the kitchen. The kitchen had a huge collection of handmade pottery to dine on.
Sadly the whole trip seems like a dream now that I am back. I have spent most of the day e-mailing people and resetting my etsy shop and taking photos of a few pieces. Can't wait to go back!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-326894083645453880.post-72188604024306712552011-07-19T10:17:00.000-07:002011-07-19T10:17:04.255-07:00Vacation!I am leaving on vacation very soon and I am so excited! Before I go however, I have some custom orders that need to come out of the kiln, posted on etsy, purchased, and sent to the post office. Lets hope it all goes well, because if they are not buying their pot before 5pm (when the post office closes) they might not get for another three weeks!!! Talk about last minute! It was this blasted kiln schedule I swear! Anyways, besides that, I am really looking forward to my trip. My sister and brother in law are coming from Germany to meet us at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where we found a nice place to rent. After our stay at the beach we will be visiting family in Guadalajara. I have declared that this trip will be all about food and how much of it I can stuff down my gullet.
the top picture is of a huge monster torta which I will be eating a lot of and the bottom one is coke light which I will also be consuming in extremely large quantities. It tastes much better than diet coke...not sure why and they come in glass bottles which is always better than plastic. I plan on making a food journal and maybe posting it all on Tumblr when I get back. I will be sure to share some photos with you guys too!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-326894083645453880.post-46703408355761547802011-07-11T13:20:00.000-07:002011-07-11T13:24:33.192-07:00Been So Long!Hello there! I know I haven't posted in so long. It has a little to do with summer fever, vacation planning, and mostly to do with the fact that I have little access to a kiln. I still haven't gotten around to getting my kiln hooked up (surprise, surprise!), and I have only a few chances to get my pots into the school kiln since school is out. Some good news is that a United Arts store has opened up near by and I no longer have to make my boyfriend take me downtown Chicago and circle the block while I haul out 150 lbs of clay. Here are some new things you will find in my shop.

In that last one with the mugs, I actually made two originally and just got around to fixing up the second one to complete the set. Of course I have one thing to fix. A large bowl I made came out with small grits on the bottom that need to be filed off and re-glazed. Got a whole lot of blue here. The mug was supposed to be a set of two, but only one came out right. The other has to be fixed, because the blue came out bad. To see more pictures of these pieces, check out my shop www.lizetpotterystudio.etsy.com
I melt on the way to my car! The good thing is that my pots dry super fast outside. I was checking out what cool things Etsy had to offer for summer. There is so much and below I have listed a few of my favorite finds.
Love this bag! Wish I could make something like this. The Etsy shop is Crazyboy and she makes denim and leather handbags. There are also messenger bags.
Gypsy Moon Designs is an awesome little shop I just discovered. They have all kinds of jewelry. They have a great bohemian style which I really like and these earrings just look like summer. There are a lot with stones, but I can't get enough of these metal patina ones. www.gypsymoondesigns.etsy.com
I just wanted to share a finished piece that people were eager to see (so was I!). Unfortunalty I got a few more pieces today that need some touch ups. So they won't be posted utnil next week. This blue one came out nice, but needs a touch up on the back. I love these color together. Oh yeah, and I fixed the small red bud vases. They look much better now.
Can't wait to hear back from them.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-326894083645453880.post-34330614651122002822011-05-26T12:15:00.000-07:002011-05-26T18:36:06.586-07:00More to Be Done!Calling for a celebration: picked up my kiln this past weekend! It was very exciting and it was such a good deal. The next step is cleaning the garage (this is no easy feat, considering it is packed with stuff that isn't mine) and then getting the electrical hookup. The kiln is a monster. It is an old Crusader kiln with no kiln sitter. I will be doing a lot of cone watching for a while. I can fit inside of it myself and will probably only need to fire every few weeks.

Getting my new-old kiln, I have spending a lot of time glazing. I realize I can benefit greatly from taking time to sketch before it is time to glaze a ton of pots. I always sit down with only a few a good ideas and sometimes ruin pots due to lack of planning and creativity. Here are few I have recently finished and will be fired soon.

During vacation in France a few years ago, I noticed that we were often served white wine in small ceramic pitchers. This isn't so common in the states, but it makes sense. It keeps your chilled white wine very cold. The ones I have been making have no handles. This is one that is in the process of being glazed with a very random pattern of Chrome green glaze. I will finish it tonight.
I think I will do a few bud vases in a similar pattern. Here are few other pieces I have been working on. I made a few more like the one that has a curly lid. The other ones are going to be planters and are difficult to describe, so you will have to see pictures later.
Okay so got kinda bored and came up with a fun idea. Maybe I can make it a monthly thing where I get cool Etsy finds and superimpose them into familiar and pretty sets. For the first time, I put my pottery into Carrie's, Samantha's, Charlotte's, and Miranda's New York apartments. I think they look pretty good. Too bad the show is over, they could have really spruced up their pads.

This is Samantha Jones' kitchen. This one was my favorite to play with. Out of all the kitchens, hers was the most memorable with its bright lighting and colors. My pots fit right in. If you can't tell, I used three pieces in this room.

Of course most of you recognize Carrie's entryway. It was hard to put my pots in her place. For one thing her rooms are already so cluttered (how quirky and lovable! Not! ) and her kitchen is fugly. Thats okay, she is my least favorite of the bunch anyways. Four pieces were used in this room.

Charlottes place is adorable, but not really a great match for my pots. there was also a lack of good photos available for me to use. So I added a tiny splash of color to her beige room and an onion bulb vase. Two pieces in this room.

I really like Miranda's place, but like most of the girls, she lacks a lot of bold color. I had a hard time finding good pieces for her living room. There are four pieces in here.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-326894083645453880.post-17891445167012343252011-04-17T23:33:00.000-07:002011-04-18T21:31:42.899-07:00Family Circle Magazine Feature!Hi everybody! So you know how I have been crazy making those little votives and I didn't tell you why? Well here it is! My yellow votive is featured in Family Circle's May issue! I knew for a while, but I still was not prepared for the feeling and I kept it hush hush (if you know me, this was very hard to do!) so I wouldn't jinx it.

So there it is! I was in Walgreens picking up some pop when my sister suggest we look in the magazine. I wasn't sure when it was coming out, but I didn't think it would be in the latest issue. She found it and almost exploded in the store. She read the article aloud to the store while I was trying to calm her down. It was awesome. Below is the picture of the little votive. I actually almost didn't glaze this piece and then almost didn't post it! Out of all the products and sellers on Etsy, three pieces were picked by Judy. I am very grateful for being Family Circle Magazine's choices.

I just got one out of the kiln today and I am pretty happy with it. There are still a few more waiting to be glazed. I just need to find some nice patterns that will inspire me. I often look at decorating books that have nice textiles and mix and match pieces that will look good in my bright glazes. Robert, the owner of The Blue Pear where I have some of my things, told me to check out the Anthropologie website for good inspiration. Thats exactly what it is time for, GOOD INSPIRATION! I always perform best when I window shop around and can't wait to see what my ideas throw together and how they all turn out.

Below is the same piece with another blue one that needs a clear coat. Most people like the blue more so far. I use my wheel to make simple rings around the piece, the rest is just a very steady hand.

It's still a little secret. I do however have some pieces I just posted in my shop that I have gotten from the kiln today as well as earlier in the week. I am so incredibly sick of making these small candle holders, so I will only post one of those here, but you can always check out all my other ones in my shop.

These are few new pieces, and if you would like to see more, check out my shop www.lizetpotterystudio.etsy.com What I am really excited about though are some small bottles I have been working on. They are very small (about the size of my hand) and when I made them they seemed like a dumb idea, but I was so sick of small candle holders! So in between making a large batch of 12 oz candle holders, I would grab the next ball and sometimes I just made something different. The bottles have a small neck and they are rounded like a bud vase. The other night I was in the middle of glazing and decided to take another break from the candle holders. I ended up taking my fine tips out and spent almost 3 hours on one of the small bud vases. It turned out looking like lace and although my hand became very stiff by the end of the night, I had so much fun making it! Below are some pieces that have inspired me in a way to make them and I can't wait to show you the finished products. The pottery is from Etsy shops and I think they are beautiful!

I have been making many many small candle holders. I mean assembly line type of work here. I try to make as many as possible and will show you my little army of small simple candle holders when I get them out on Monday. Some glazed and some yet to be. Yesterday I took a lot (I wish I would have counted, maybe like 30 pieces) to the kiln, so what I have to share today are a few older pieces that you may have seen as bisque ware in my previous posts.

Here are two pieces that I have complete that will be dry and ready to fire next Monday. I wanted to try and make a teapot that wasn't round and had an attached handle. The smaller vase below it has a new texture that I discovered. It looks like a steel drum. I can't wait to use it some more and see how it looks once it's glazed.
So sorry to my 8 followers! Haha! Oh yeah, and I haven't been anywhere in case you were wondering with my title and all. I've just been making some pots, glazing, and oh yeah that nice globe sized pot in the previous post exploded in the kiln! That one along with another very nice large pitcher. I'm not very sure why, but they were my fist large pots. I think they weren't fully dry. Oh wait, come to think of it I was someplace. Last Friday I was part of an artist walk and had my stuff set up in a nice little store called The Blue Pear. It turned out pretty well and I left some of my pots there in the store too. I was pretty busy getting ready for that with bags and inventory and packaging 30 pots to go to their show.

So here are few pots that are ready to get fired. I am pretty nervous about the two larger ones, because of what happened to my other big ones. I will keep my fingers crossed. The teapot will not get its bamboo handle until after it's second firing. I like the way it turned out, it looks like Aladdin's lamp kinda.

I have also been working on tapering bottle necks. They take me a long time to make, so I want to get my technique down so I can make them a lot faster. Below are 2 bottles that I have modified. One is carved to look like wood and the other was squared. the squared one reminds me of I dream of Jeanie lamp...but square. I can't wait to get these babies glazed!
What made it worse was that there was also no way of getting to the studio where I fire my things due to a massive snow storm. Finally this week I have got some new things to share. When I finally did get my clay I began working with really large pieces that I had never had the confidence for. I did succeed though! I keep adding a bit more to the load every week. Most of the greenware pots are whats cookin right now. they will be ready to glaze tomorrow.

I was very happy with this pot. It came out perfectly round and I made my first ever thrown knob! I love the way it turned out. I have absolutely no clue how to glaze it. When finished throwing the pot it stood at about a foot, once it dried it only measured 10" and once I get it from the kiln tomorrow, it will probably be about 9". That really bothers me! Below is a photo on my wheel. This pot was about a foot tall when it was wet. Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of it when I transformed it into a large pitcher.

I just made the lid to this teapot today and it will be trimmed tomorrow. The teapot has a genie lamp shape. The simple lidded pot on top has a great shape and its simple so it leaves a nice blank canvas to glaze. Below are a few finished pieces that are now posted in shop. www.lizetpotterystudio.etsy.com
I ran out of clay and can't get some more til this weekend. Then today and probably tomorrow I am snowed in so I cant head out to give classes. Today I had a major creative energy surge and my outlet was a claymation. It's not great, but it was fun making it. I think with better clay I can make really good figures. Also I would have had more time if I had made it at night with artificial light rather than racing against the sun.
With a little over three weeks away, it is perfect timing for shipping and handling when ordering online. I usually make gifts for my sweetie whether its a painting, photography, or other kinds of artwork. However I know that most of us don't have much time or the creativity to make something by hand. This post is full of handpicked items that are handmade from Etsy. It can be called a gift guide, but really some of the stuff are just nice to buy for yourself if you are getting the warm fuzzy feeling of reds, pinks, and sweets around the beginning of February. Basically of valentine themed things that I really like. The link is listed below the picture.
These cards are super cute! The shop is called Flapper Doodle. All the prints and other paper goods are doodles of these little flappers. www.flapperdoodle.etsy.com Her other acsessories are just as cute as the Valentines day features.
